biomimetic jewellery

This is an early design for some biomimetic jewellery I am making. So far it has invited people to play with it when they see it which is interesting :-). It has insect qualities, something which I will continue to research, which reflects biomimicry. I have made the mechanism from aluminium which holds some stainless steel fabric mesh which is an amazing material though its a pain because it creases easily. You forget its metal!

Spanish architect based in Paris. Influenced by biomimetic ideas such as skeletal systems, palm leaves and the human eye. His buildings often have a physical moving part to them adding to their biomimetic characters.

 Pegasus Bridge, Benouville, France

'Pegasus Bridge was the first engagement of D-Day, the turning point of World War II. It was so crucial that, had it been unseccessful, the entire Normandy invasion might have failed.' (Stephen E. Ambrose 1985)

bahrain 2010

Interesting place.....
First thoughts are that it is just a huge development project. There are really beautiful historical forts and traditional buildings but these are outnumbered by the new, crisp, modern city they are trying to build. Everywhere you go there are new buildings going up. Its only a small island but there must be at least five enourmous shopping centres packed with Western shops and culture. It was interesting to see as much of their traditions and cultures as I could though it has been swamped by the modern development. There are some ace places to eat and spend the evening and the weather was hot even in December. Very sandy though and I missed the green hills of Wales!

Choreography

'Glass Choreography'

This series of works was again from 2010. It led on from the 'armour' work. I was looking more into movement and choreography. I moved from oak to glass because I wanted to experiment more with light and shadows. The 'prop' I made which is used in the photo's is made from perspex designed to imitate float glass. The size and nature of the piece didn't allow the use of glass wheras perspex allowed me to capture an essence of movement as though involved in some sort of dance or routine.

dylan thomas

'Shaped in Armour and Oak'

This work that I produced in 2010 took inspiration from the Dylan Thomas poem 'O Make Me a Mask'. I looked into armour from throughout history, particularily japanese armour. I wanted to capture the protective and aggressive nature of armour as well as the movement involved with wearing it. I used Welsh oak for its amazing golden colour and also to honour the DylanThomas poem.
